But a good present tense is really about texture, not time, and should be as rich and complicated and full of possibilities as the past tense.
Perhaps my thinking is skewed by my need to keep everything rolling and rolling quickly. I do not pay particular attention to either one form or another as I seem to get lost in my stories and just let the written wrecking ball swing as it chooses.

If you use the words after or before in this type of situation, the simple past is sometimes used with BOTH actions because the words after and before already make the time relationship clear. To get the widest range of options in your narrative, use past tense.I’m surprised there’s such a debate on this subject.
